Sox Power Past 'Canes and Into Final
IAN LENEHAN, 18th September - Today the
Black Sox had the opportunity to play themselves deeper into this competition than any Black Sox team has previously done.
They had the chance to beat the (at one point) seemingly unbeatable Hurricanes, and in doing so knock the 2003 Champions out
of the competition. They had the chance to do this for themselves, and especially for one member of the team who couldn’t
make it today.
One win from two games was all that was needed, but no member of the
Black Sox wanted to win it in two. They wanted to win it in one. And they did.
It looked good from the start, when "Dr K" Mike Kindle, pitched out
of a jam to bring the game to the bottom of the first still scoreless. The Sox took off from the word go. Two runs in the
first gave them the confidence they needed to take this game to the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes, however, scored four runs in the second inning - the
strong winds creating havoc for Black Sox outfielders. From an outside perspective it may have looked like the Hurricanes
would take over, and Sox head would drop. From the Black Sox perspective, it was an opportunity to get the lead back in the
bottom of the second. And that they did - tagging on five more runs.
From there, they never looked back, and entering the bottom of the
fifth, the Black Sox led 17-4. Two runs in that inning and the game would have been called on the Mercy Rule. They didn’t
manage this, but Kindle and the Sox held on for a 17-8 victory, and a date with the Spartans next week in the National Final.
The game was won with strong pitching from Kindle, fearless hitting
from the whole team, and a breakout day from Kevin Dillon, who had 3 hits, a walk and a spectacular catch in left-center in
the scoreless seventh.
Confidence is high, but the Sox now need to focus on next week’s
game. They are one win away from being crowned National Champions for the first time - but must not forget they are coming
up against a formidable Spartans team.

Tommy "The Virgin" Branigan
Tommy Tears It Up In Belfast
EOIN O'CONNOR Sunday 13th June - The Black Sox successfully secured a 24-8 victory over the Wolves on Sunday. However the game didn't start as easy as the score line suggests. It was a tight affair for 5 innings and the Sox were kept in it by some clutch 2 out hits from Tommy the
rookie! Tommy went a very impressive 5 for 6 with LOTS of RBIs. Most of these
were with 2 outs. Eventually the Sox eased away and took the win. It was important for the under manned Black Sox to
get the job done. Especially with a double header against the Blue Devils coming up which will again see the Sox missing some
key players.
Pitching
wise we were up and down.. But we did see Ruaidhri's debut on the mound (well at least where the mound would be!) Eoin pitched
six innings and Ruaidhri closed it out with a 1, 2, 3 inning in the last.
Other
notable performances came from Pat "The Cat" who hit an in the park home run and "The Machine" Murphy went 4 for 4.
On
a lighter note the team have also come up with an award for the worst play/player of the day. This award is still not officially
named so suggestions are welcome. This weeks winner, and I think he could be
a winner for some time, is good ol' Johnny Bohan. After being given an opportunity
at short stop he proved that he's got a great outfielders arm. Enough said...

Ruaidhri Murphy
Baseball, Meet Ruaidhri Murphy
IAN LENEHAN Sunday 23rd May - "I'll put money that Ruaidhri's next to do it", Eoin predicted after Pat's 3-run home
run against the Mariners. So the Black Sox were hardly surprised when in fact Ruairdhri was the next to hit a home run. It
was actually the manner that it was done - a first inning Grand Slam - combined with his final line for the game that
has people talking.
Murphy had threatened the long ball on a number of occasions before, and despite being only 16 years of age he obviously
had the power to do it. The first inning against the Trojans started off with three straight walks. Placed in the cleanup
spot, Murphy hit a towering fly ball just over the left field fence, clearing the bases. Two home runs in two games for the
Black Sox after never having hit one before. Surely you cant better that or can you? In his next at bat, Ruairdhri defied
the odds by going yard again, this time a 3-run in the park home run. Two for two with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs. Some line - that
would only get better.
Ruairdhri's next at bat resulted in a walk, and at a play at second base, he injured his wrist. Reluctant to come out
of the game, as this would have left the Sox a man down, he played on. Next time up, with the bases loaded he surprised everybody
with a bunt single, driving in another run. At the end of 6 innings (game called due to the Mercy Rule) Ruairdhri had gone
3 for 3 with two walks and an incredible 10 RBIs. Anyway, enough about him.
The Black Sox had a comfortable 15 run lead going into the fifth, enough to invoke the mercy rule that would have ended
the game after five. Stand in Trojan John Dillon had other ideas though, and he got the Trojans going with an in the parker
of his own. Dillon lead the Trojans on their comeback but it could only produce a total of 6 runs in the game. The Sox managed
to haul in 21, enough to call the game after six.
The Black Sox head to Belfast after a strong 21-6 victory to play two games against the Wolves with a 4-3 record and
hope to finish their road trip at a smart 6-3.
KEVIN DILLON - Ruadhrai Murphy announced his presence in Irish Baseball today with a blast and in the process added
another chapter to Black Sox history. The first 3 Sox hitters reached base in the first inning and Ruadhrai, batting
clean up, blasted his and the Sox first ever grand slam. In his second at bat he showed his speed with an 'In
the Park' home run on a ball hit to deep centre and padded his RBI tally to 7. His final line for the day, 3 for
3, 10 RBI's, 2 home runs and 2 walks. The other eight guys on the team showed up too, they got 11 runs and a solid pitching
outing for a final score of 21- 6. The Sox moved to 4 and 3 on the season before making an important trip to Belfast.

Black Sox Disappoint Against
Northstars
KEVIN DILLON - It wasn't the lack of opportunity or effort but the
inability to execute the fundamental plays that caused the Sox to drop this one. The pitcher didnt have his dominating stuff
so he went to the ground ball for outs. The ground balls duly came but the outs didnt follow, at least not often enough for
the Sox to gain any type of hold on the game.
As a contest it was another close game and another for the neutral
to enjoy, both teams adding a run here, another run there and after 5 the score was predictably tied at 6 runs apiece. The
bottom of the 6th however proved to be the downfall of the Sox as the Northstars put 4 runs on the board. The Sox
meanwhile could only reply with 1 of their own. Final score 10 to 7 Northstars, previously winless against the Black Sox.
Next week's game against the Mariners begins to take on a must win
status if the Black Sox are to contend for a play off spot in what is becoming a dog fight of a season.

Johhny Bohan and Paul Peake Warm Up
Heavy Rain Brings Out The Team's True Colours
KEVIN DILLON - Little good can come from a game when you're
on the wrong end of a 15-7 score line; I know because I looked and couldn't find it.
The Black Sox spent their season opener constantly chasing a game
that looked to be getting away from them early, it was 4-0 after one, but at least made it interesting by closing to 7-6 at
the midway point. The feeling then was that the Sox could go on and win it, at least until everything went pear shaped in
the next frame. Suddenly the Sox were chasing again, this time a more formidable 13-6.
A sudden downpour sent both teams to their respective dugouts; the
Panthers huddled in a tent while the tent less Sox shared a smoke and an umbrella. Amazingly, when play resumed, most of the
hard men Panthers chose to play with their jackets on, perhaps fearing the wrath of whoever washes their uniforms!
The Sox gambled that the now wet conditions would aid them with their
side coming to bat and so made a last gasp challenge. A leadoff double and passed ball leading to an infield RBI single was
the highlight of the last two innings, but an out and a questionable (the writer is being generous) call at first stopped
the rally. They still loaded them up but only managed to close the gap by one run. After that the Sox went down weakly to
hand the Panthers a win and the advantage to the team that finished one place above them in 2003.

Kindle Delivers One
Sunday's Doubleheader Split
KEVIN
DILLON - Splitting a double header, for some reason, always seems like losing to me, and so it was the Sox came away from
today feeling like they were on the downside even though they scored 19 runs against 8 conceded over the two ties and won
the second game. Traditionally winning the second game should make you feel like
you came back from behind to pull off a victory.
The
fact was they were always expected to win that game seeing as how it was home to the Trojans, Baseball Ireland's newest franchise,
who were still looking for their first win. The Sox duly won, by a score of 14
- 2 and never looked to be in any trouble. Against a wild pitcher they took their
walks and some early scores and after a change of pitchers the Sox seen some to hit and did so.
Contrastingly,
game one didn't disappoint the neutral baseball fan. Another one run game against
their perennial foes, the Spartans. 6 - 5 the final score, to the Spartans, a
result though that was always in doubt until the final out.
The Spartans
scored early, taking a one run lead and then adding runs slowly until it was 4 - 0 in the fifth. The Sox with some timely clutch hitting brought the score to 4 -3 setting the scene for the most audacious
play of the day (or season perhaps). 2 outs and a 2 and 2 count with a runner
on third. Sal Rizo takes advantage of the lefty pitcher by stealing home and
scoring the tying run. Brilliant. Had
that been it or had the Sox used their momentum to score a couple more runs things may have turned out very different indeed.

July 4th at Corkagh Park
Super Sox Hand Hurricanes
Their First Loss and Split Doubleheader
PAUL PEAKE 4th July (Game One) - With the Hurricanes coming in to the game with a 10 - 0 winning streak the Black Sox
knew that this first game would be a battle of gigantic proportions. But not one so large that the skill and determination
of a talented team such as ours wouldnt be able to overcome. (this is harder than I thought it would be Anyway, I shall continue my contribution to the SOX web page)
Confidence in the Sox camp was at an all time high in the days preceding the game - the usual
razor-sharp e-mail wit was spiked with the added element of provocation towards the 'Canes (as they apparently like to be
called) and as the intensity of the game grew, it was decided by a few (Eoin and myself) that a couple of the now customary
pre-game rituals (namely drinking copious amounts of alcohol and the chasing of young women the night before a game) were
to be forgone. (Sal, thanks for the vote of confidence but the Spartypuffs arent worth it)
Game day 4th July
As the star spangled banned bellowed from the Black Sox dug-outs fence (dispensation given for
the day that it was) the customary pre-game banter and exchange of derogatory
comments was rapidly replaced by the whining moans from last weeks sustaining progress award winner (Mr. P.J Fox), still finding
it hard to believe that he deserved this prestigious award. Although to give credit to where it is due and even though he
was still battling the tremendously painful hamstring injury, PJ was able to
maximise his input with the team by volunteering to Coach from 3rd base. Great job done!! by the way despite
the belligerent mumbles.
Many other battles would rage throughout the morning, none more so than that between the two National
team pitchers. (Eoin OConnor, SOX & Cormac Eklof P/Canes) Each fought hard, although it was Eoin who was hungrier for
the win ..(as he was forced to make sacrifices the night before) managed to gather strength
and commitment and produced yet another epic performance. Only four walks given
and no runs scored - well done Eoin.
To further hasten the retreat of the crimson
canes, another superstar
performance was provided .. Ruaidhris power and accuracy caught two if not three runners
trying to steal second.and with all-round great defence, A solid defence that was definitely helped out by Sal's diving catch, Mikes double play at 3rd, and several
snares by yours truly at first (Well, I though they were pretty good)
The dispatch continued inning after
inning, every time we needed to come up with the ball we did and in a game with (as far as I can remember) NO ERRORS !!! I hope we have been able to show our mentor and manager that we can prevail without
his presence. (hope you enjoyed Kerry Kevin)
Not to take away from the Hurriccanes,
they did fight hard and as far as Im aware they also had an error free game,
but already I have heard the question being asked .. did they blow themselves out to early in the season time will tell (and
pardon the pun)
Post game
Well done sox for being a part of a
great day in Irish baseball even if that part was ending a winning streak could
you imagine having to listen to the .OOOOhhhhh!!!! We went a whole season without
anybody being able to beat us.. well!! not only did we beat an impressive line
up .but, we did it with style. Its team work that counts and thats who and what we are To understand that everyone performed
to their MAX means everything. We got key hits from the bottom of our order, especially Tommy and Ian and with the important
first blood taken in the first inning and with solid performances by all, remember what it is finish a tightly fought game
on the winning side.
Before I go, I must offer a late congratulations
to Chris Foy who made a great catch in left field, well done Chris and Im sure if had beat you . I reckon that it would have
been just fair(also) ha ha..
EOIN O'CONNOR 4th July (Game 2) - After the great success in game
one the Sox were eager to complete the sweep that would send shock waves throughout the league. The 'Canes were determined
not to let it happen. There pitcher had driven up from Cork and wasnt about to throw it away. As we took the field in the top of the first, the heavens opened. Mike
threw one strike and it was time for a rain delay.
About 30 minutes later and after some much needed field maintenance we continued the game. Mike, as always, mixed it
up superbly. And as is now common our defence was solid. The problem in this game was going to be scoring runs. The 'Canes
are full of top quality players and errors are few and far between. For the second game they produced an unseen before lefty
who knew how to gas it up.
The 'Canes scored an early run and it stayed 1-0 till the top of the 7th. Mike gave up two hits and Jason
decided to try to stop this momentum and brought Eoin back in. Eoin got through the inning but not before 2 runs had scored.
It was now or never for the Sox and we went down in order to end the game.
A disappointing end to the day, but we should all be proud of our performances. After all how many times will we concede
only 3 runs in two games and split a double header to the Hurricanes?
Next up is the Spartans, who now share the same number of losses as the Hurricanes. Needless to say they were pretty
happy when we ended the unbeaten run by the 'Canes. Now it's time for us to show them just how we did it!!

The Main Man
Devils No Test in Double Win for the Sox
EOIN O'CONNOR Saturday 19th June - The Sox comprehensively swept the Blue Devils in their double header on Saturday. Despite being again slighty under manned they put together two solid performances
and comfortably beat the Blue Devils, leaving the Sox in real contention for third place.
Game 1 saw Eoin on the hill who shut out the Blue Devils and kept them to only two hits. Through a solid hitting, the Sox had game one over in 5 innings, with the game finishing 15-0 and called
through the mercy rule. All in all it was solid team batting which won this game. Kevin picked up the unnamed award for being stupidly picked off 1st with bases
loaded and 2 outs.. Good job KD!
Also thanks to last weeks winner, Johnny, for his great work in getting a (piece of shit - Ed.) trophy for this prestigious
award!
Game 2 was pretty similar to the first. This time Ruaidhri "The Machine" Murphy made his first start. He was on a no
hitter util the 6th where his inferior ability to mine showed and he gave up a couple hits and runs. Despite this the
Sox still managed to win by 10+ runs giving Murphy his first "W". Again, solid
team batting including a double by Bob saw the Sox triumph.
Saturday also saw the baseball debut of "Dicko", Adam. Fair play to him for coming out when it looked we'd be short
a man. Adam got thrown in the deep end but showed signs of potential managing to put the bat on the ball a few times. Could
be one for the future. J

Home Run Hero Pat Nolan
Nolan and O'Connor Power Sox To Victory
IAN LENEHAN
- Sunday's game against the Mariners will be remembered for more than just the heart pounding 7-6 victory. The first ever
home run hit by a member of the Black Sox came in the form of a third inning, three run shot, courtesy of "The Cat", Pat Nolan.
Up until then the game had been a well paced and tidy two innings, which had produced no runs on either side.
The Black
Sox started off desperately needing a morale boosting "W", having lost to the Northstars the previous week, another first
in our short history. With a focused Eoin O'Connor on the mound, he displayed the type of stuff in the first five innings
that earned him the Cy Young award in his debut season as a pitcher. If it hadnt been for the 80 pitches that he had thrown
in National Team training only a day and a half before, he would have most likely continued in that fashion to shut down the
Mariners for seven innings.
This
is not the first time this season that OConnor has pitched a good game, but it is the first time that dominating pitching
was complimented with a sterling defense. Balls were being caught, throws were being made, and everybodys heads seemed to
be in the game.
After
four innings the Black Sox led by a score of 7-0. Two base hits led off the third, and Pat Nolan was up next. The outfield
was hugging the fence, unusual in the Irish league, but it did them no good. Nolan waited for his pitch, and effortlessly
drove the offering over the left field fence, to give the boys in black a three run lead. Needless to say, he was greeted
at the plate by his jubilant team members. The Mariners regrouped for a quick team meeting. This however, did them no good,
as by the end of the fourth, four more runs had been added.
As our
pitchers arm began to tire, the Mariners pulled three runs back in the sixth. The seventh was difficult to watch, and to partake
in. Following another three runs, with the score at 7-6 Black Sox, OConnor left it late to brilliantly get the team out of
a bases loaded jam making a backhand grab from the mound and ending the ball game with a squeamish throw to first.
Its just
a pity Paul Peake is such a puff. Be-atch!
KEVIN
DILLON - Forgive me if this report sounds bland, but its hard to find the words to properly describe what this writer considers
to be one of the best shows ever by this Black Sox team.
Coming
in needing a win, they did that, and in the process created a little bit of team history when Pat Nolan jacked one over the
left field fence with two on for the first ever Black Sox home run. Offers for
the ball on e-bay please! On its own that would be enough to make any game memorable
but before and after that the Sox did everything right and sometimes in dramatic fashion.
There were many excellent plays too but two web gems stick out in my mind, Jason Nebenzahl scooping one an inch from
the ground and far to his right, then making the throw to first for the 4-3 double play, and Johnny Bohan running from centre
to slide under a shallow fly for another important out. Like I said thats just
two that stick but the Sox in every department played good fundamental baseball today.
Did I
mention the hitting? No easy outs today and no looking at the 3rd
strike either. Just about every at bat resulted in a ball in play and the seven
runs scored, enough for a one run win, were all scored on clutch hits.
Of course,
without a good showing from your pitcher seven runs wont win you anything in this league.
Eoin OConnor brought his A game today and looked outstanding through the first six innings. Bases loaded jams, no problem, got em out. Had Mike
Kindle not been injured and replaced by a pinch runner in the seventh he might have come in and closed this one out, but it
was Eoins game to win or lose. He made it interesting, the Mariners scored 6
late runs but with two outs, bases loaded in the bottom of the last Eoin induced a ground ball that he fielded himself and
threw to first for the final out and a Black Sox victory.
Hey,
I guess I found the words after all.

Black Sox Celebrate Victory
Sox Manage To Shake Off Tigers
KEVIN DILLON - In stark contrast to the season opener todays game
was played under bright sunshine, weather so perfect for baseball that we had a 3-hour plus game to enjoy it all the more.
Long it may have been but slow and unexciting it wasnt as the Sox finally ran out winners on the day 16-9.
The first 5 innings were a ding-dong battle, giving the Tigers a 3
run lead in the opening frame, the Sox tying it up in the bottom half and adding 3 more in the second, the Tigers clawing
their way back to parity with one run in the 3rd and 2 more in the fourth. It was beginning to look like the momentum
of the Sox was lost and who could blame them when after loading up the bases with 1 out in the 2nd the runner on
1st fell victim to the hidden ball. The fact that the pitcher was on the mound and that this happened straight after the umpires
called time seemed lost on the officials and so the remainder of the game was played under protest.
The bottom of the 4th produced another 2 runs for the Sox
but sure enough the Tigers came back with 2 of their own in the next. Time for a dugout moral session and get those bats going
again which they did and effectively that was game over. The Sox put 4 on the board in each of the next 2 innings and despite
the noisy chatter that greeted every Tiger batter and base runner they only managed a single run ending the game fittingly
with a big K.
More importantly and despite the distraction that was a baseball game,
the Sox unveiled their new uniforms today. To the agreement of all, neutrals included, they looked fantastic. Id still be
wearing mine if I could get away with it!

Ruaidhri went 2 for 2 with a double off Jaime Cuevas of the Spartans
Sox Drop Both
in the Blitz
The Black Sox dropped both
games of the blitz, the first to the Spartans 5-1. The scoreline was deceptive though, as Eoin pitched a one hitter and
we still lost! The second game was dropped to the 2003 Champions, the Hurricanes, 8-4. There was a good bit of experimenting
done in both games, and we didn't want to play in the final anyway because the Irish Rugby team were playing for the Triple
Crown ;-)
